4 FAQs About Bifold Door Curtains

As an investment, curtains are one of the best you can make for your home.

From an interior design perspective, they represent a beautiful addition to your living spaces, tying the rest of the room together and creating a wonderful focal point that brings your windows to life.

And from a more practical point of view, your curtains help with thermoregulation, privacy and light control, so there are all sorts of associated benefits to finding the perfect set to hang.

However, some windows are easier to dress than others and you might well find it a little tricker to find the best option for your bifold doors than you would for your bay windows, perhaps.

If you’re currently mulling over your choices and you’re not sure where to begin, here are some of the more frequently asked questions about curtains for bifold doors to help point you in the right direction. If you need any further guidance or advice, get in touch with the Pret A Vivre team today.

Are curtains or blinds better for bifold doors?

The best dressing option for your bifold doors will depend on how much space you have to play around with.

If you’ve got all the space in the world, curtains would be an excellent choice because they’ll look very luxurious and help to keep out the glare, but if you’re limited with room, blinds would work far better. Whatever you decide, it’s advisable to choose your curtain options before you have your bifold doors installed.

Are roller blinds good for bifolding doors?

Roller blinds will always be a beautiful addition to any home, but note that they usually need at least 20cm of stacking space in order to work. If you have the room, these blinds would work particularly well.

How heavy should curtain fabric be for bifold doors?

Typically, your bifolding doors will be located somewhere that allows you to open them out and connect the interior and exterior of your home. As such, you may find that a lighter fabric choice works better, something like a voile material perhaps.

When the doors are open, this would sway in the breeze from outside, making your living spaces feel light and airy, while still ensuring that you are able to control privacy and light (to a certain extent).

How do you measure your curtains for bifold doors?

As with any of your windows, accurate measurements are essential to avoid potentially costly mistakes. Start by measuring the full width of the doors when fully extended, including an additional width of 20 per cent to account for curtain fullness and coverage when closed.

Then measure the height from the top of the curtain rod to the floor. It’s advisable to make sure your curtains hang just above the floor, or just touching it, to reduce the risk of dragging.

Also consider how wide the curtains will be when open. You need to be able to get through your doors with ease, without compromising on the look or feel of the curtains themselves.
